Whilst giving greater autonomy to regions is very good for publicity as far as politicians are concerned it may have a counter productive effect on self determination. Whilst the politicians have espoused and pontificated on greater freedom and respect for the Andalusians and greater powers for them to determine their own fiscal spend, the hidden problems have been largely ignored.
Giving a region greater freedom may, in the case of Spain at least, end by creating just another layer to which the powerful corruptive classes hover like flies: they will do so now without the restraining factor of Madrid.
It should not be forgotten that the case of Malaya where the entire Malagan assembly was dissolved was less than a year ago. Although the ringleaders have been caught, there is still suspicion up and down the coast and investigations are still underway. It is these same politicians who are in the new assembly and who will be given greater power over the Andalusian people.
Whilst this is doom and gloom it must be remembered that the devil is in the detail and the detail is always who will be the executive in charge of these new functions.
Hopefully it will not be the Andalusians who pay for the sake of some headline grabbing politicians: the track history of corruption in Andalucia is not good.
