Guardia

UnRated: Click here to rateClick here to rateClick here to rateClick here to rateClick here to rate

The Guardia, long been used as an extension of the army controlled by the late General Franco for quelling rebellion, has had its time.

It needs to modernise, or be replaced by a civilian body.

It has long been viewed with distrust by the people of Spain due to its unnacountability.

It is good news that inspired change to this body has come from within - for whatever motives.

Whatever the outcome it is to be hoped that a modern Guardia responsible to the Spanish Parliament rather than to the army will both:

1. reduce the power of the army to keep threatening revolt.

2. Produce a Guardia acceptable to the people of Spain and accountable to them.

3. Allow the Guardia and their families the rights to live as modern police should live in the community
