In a move that is likely to lose him many friends both in and beyond Spain, Zapatero, President of the government, appears to have taken a unilateral decision to grant concessions to the ETA prisoner Juana Chaos.
Chaos is at least partly responsible for the murder of 25 people, an action for which he has expressed no regret or acceptance.
In a democracy there's no such person as a freedom fighter. In any case a freedom fighter does not kill innocent civilians indiscriminately. Chaos cannot be considered anything but a murderer and deserves his sentence. "Zapatero has shown himself to be a coward and a traitor and should explain himself to congress, or resign"
Juana made the decision to starve himself and deprive the law of its verdict. In so doing he signed his own death sentence and should have been left to see it out. It is true that suicide is illegal and the state must not be seen to be aiding. It is true that we no longer have capital punishment. But there is a difference between seeking to end life and going to unreasonable steps to preserve it, especially when the population of Spain is against such a measure.
Zapatero was right to commence force feeding. But the law must remain and by changing the law for one man and releasing Chaos, Zapatero has made the law on murder in Spain entirely arbitrary and redundant. The law against Murder in Spain no longer exists, the precedent has been set that the President of Congress can and will will release criminals if they hunger strike.
There are some situations when brave men make brave decisions. Zapatero has shown himself to be a coward and a traitor and should explain himself to congress, or resign.
The effect of this move toward a prerogative power of release on behalf of Zapatero smacks of Stalin and his machinations, it is not for the terrorists to define the law by their action in a civilised democracy.
