Zapatero Guarantees Water

The President of Congress and chief of the executive Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was in a new desalination plant in San Pedro de Pinatar yesterday tasting the new supply of water for himself. The Plant at San Pedro in Murcia is one of the first to be activated. Zapatero told the assembled crowd that the way forward was by desalination and that there would be "Water for everyone".

Zapatero: "Agua Para Todos"

Agua Para Todos was the slogan used by objectors to the PSOE, Zapatero's party when they scrapped the irrigation channels between the Ebro and Seguro rivers which would have allowed cheap water to be provided to Murcia.

Costs have not yet been worked out for desalination though the final costs will be met by the end user. The power for the desalination is suggested to come from renewable sources such as wind power.

However the greatest use of water,  in Murcia, is during the summer seasons when power must come from non-renewable sources and coal/gas fired generators of the national grid. Much of the money for the irrigation system promoted by the PP was to be met by the EU in a grant. This has now lapsed.

In the same meeting the President of the autonomy of Murcia Ramon Valcarcel asked that the canal that provides water from the Tajo to Seguro be filled. There is a ongoing dispute between Murcia and La Mancha about the quantities of water supplied through this system. With more and more development, Murcia which has no reservoirs or water of its own except for ground wells and the Seguro need more and more water.
