Barcelona crashed out of the Champions League last night, despite a 1-0 victory at Anfield against Liverpool. Eidur Gudjohnsen scored the only goal of the game, yet Frank Rijkaard saw his team lose the tie on aggregate after the 1-2 home defeat two weeks earlier. Liverpool imposed early pressure on Barca, with John Arne Riise coming close several times within the first half. A poor clearance present Momo Sissoko with a chance to take the lead for Liverpool, but his long-range effort hit the crossbar.
After the break, Barca produced attack after attack, only to be shut out by Liverpool’s Spanish keeper Pepe Reina. Liverpool’s solid defence forced some tactical changes from Barca coach Frank Rijkaard, and it saw the introduction of Ludovic Giuly and Eidur Gudjohnsen, the latter having an almost instant impact by rounding Reina and slotting the ball home. However, a tense final 15 minutes was not long enough for Barca to get the all important second goal, and Liverpool go through to the quarter-finals.
